This shows the north wall of the refectory. The abbey is much in ruins but the grounds are beautifully kept.
Lindores Abbey was founded in the late 12th century by David, Earl of Huntingdon, brother of King William I.
The first Abbot of Lindores was Guido who had been the prior of Kelso Abbey. Prior Guido arrived with some two dozen Benedictine monks of the Order of Tiron.
In 1543 Reformers sacked the abbey and later in 1559 they attacked again knocking over the altars, destroying statues, and burning books and vestments.
By the end of the 16th century Lindores Abbey was being used as a source of building materials for houses in Newburgh.
